Time not spent at Pitt County Memorial Hospital is spent in the surrounding rural counties during the psychiatry, family medicine, and pediatric clerkships. Do not fret about a lack of breadth at ECU during the clinical years hands on opportunities abound at this tertiary care center. Pitt County Memorial Hospital draws from a wide referral base that spans 1-95 to the coast of North Carolina, offering its pupils plenty of pathology to add to their repertoire. On inpatient services, no medical student is made to feel like a wallflower. Students are an integral part of the team and are encouraged to take on as much responsibility as they are comfortable taking. The ob/gyn and surgery clerkships are especially known for offering hands on experience. Rural sites also serve as excellent opportunities for learning procedures without competing with residents for experience.

After weathering the trials and tribulations of third year, students are revvarded with a year of electives. In keeping with ECU's primary care mission, two primary care requirements must be fulfilled from dozens of choices. For those with a more adventuresome side, the administration is flexible in helping create individually designed electives, including travel abroad or research projects. Foremost on most fourthyear students' minds, however, is how to spend the four weeks of vacation allowed anytime throughout the year. While most spend at least part of this time interviewing for residency programs, there are no stipulations against using it for, say, honeymoons, cruises, or studying for Step 2 of the boards. Senior medical students are equally preoccupied with the infamous Match Day. Every year, 56 percent of ECU students choose a career in primary care, including family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. ECU also has its share of aspiring surgeons (including neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and urology), dermatologists, and obstetricians/ gynecologists. In the past several years, approximately three quarters of the graduating class has matched in one of their top three choices in programs across the country.

Social Life

Believe it or not, there is time at Brody School Of Medicine to spend outside of the classrooms, labs, clinics, and hospital to have a life. City slickers need not despair.
