ALL ABOUT CASE WESTERN RESERVE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Located on the shores of what the locals call America's North Coast (you guessed it: Lake Erie), the School of Medicine at Case Western has the feel of a 150 year old work in progress. It's a place where the traditional in medical education is combined with the state of the art, There's no dearth of ideas and educational experimentation at Case Western Reserve University School Of Medicine; some of it is screwy, some brilliant, all of it an earnest attempt to find better ways to fashion excellent physicians for the new century. You may sometimes feel like a guinea pig, but Case Western makes students doctors.

Preclinical Years

Like other medical schools, the first two years consist of sitting in a single lecture hall and mastering the fundamental underpinnings of medicine. Unlike other places, classes are held six days a week, 4 hours each day, leaving the afternoons free for studying either medicine or the exhibits at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Subjects are taught in large, loose themes, including, for example, the Biological Basis of Disease (otherwise known as "bugs and drugs"). Each student is given a laptop computer upon entering his or her first year, and the School tries hard to integrate hightech teaching modalities with the old fashioned mindnumbing lectures. Some students type their lecture notes directly into the laptop, and most classes organize a note sharing service to minimize all the scribbling (and typing). Most tests are multiple choice, and grading is blinded by an elaborate system of numeric codes designed to be fair and minimize student competition. If you do poorly on a test, the test code is deciphered. This is known (in ominous and Orwellian fashion) as being "identified," ostensibly so that the student can be tutored and brought up to speed. Best not to be identified at all; at Case Western Medical School, anonymity is success.
In response to student desire to have some early clinical experiences, a patient based program that runs parallel to the classroom didactics during years one and two was established. Each student is paired with a pregnant woman and follows her through her prenatal care. After students have helped deliver the baby, they participate in each of the infant's pediatric clinic visits. This has proved to be a popular component of the first two years and will remind you why you wanted to go to medical school in the first place. It wasn't the Krebs cycle.

In addition to the core lecture series and the patient based program, case based teaching has been integrated into the program, and there are additional weekly small group sessions that deal with the ethical and sociopolitical aspects of medicine. A wide variety of electives are available to fill the afternoon, from acupuncture to bench research to working in STD clinics to flying with the emergency physicians of the Life Flight helicopter

Clinical Years

Third year is devoted to each of the major disciplines (pediatrics, surgery, etc.) and is spent mostly at University hospitals (a large complex of once separate general women's and children's hospitals adjacent to the medical school) and MetroHealth Medical Center, the former county hospital. Less time is spent at the Veteran's Administration, Mt. Sinai, and St. Luke's, all a short drive from the school. (The Cleveland Clinic Hospital has an affiliation with another medical school, so only the rare elective is done there.) The diversity of the patient population is great and includes the demographics particular to the area, including a large Eastern European population as well as the Amish
An alternative primary care track was established in 1994 for students who are certain that this is their interest. It involves curricular differences in all years (earlier courses on physical diagnosis, fcr instance) but mostly differs in the clinical years, when the traditional in patient rotations are integrated with a greater amount of ambulatory care medicine. Fourth year is some what less harried for all students and is devoted largely to electives and to applying and interviewing for residency. Students do well at the match in general: 90 percent match at a residency in the top three on their list.

Social Life

Cleveland continues to be the butt of many jokes, but the "mistake on the lake" is a nice enough city. Its citizens are justifiably proud of its cultural resources, which include the new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Jacob's Field, the home of the Cleveland Indians, as well as lovely museums of art and natural history. The world famous Cleveland Orchestra performs a block from the medical school in University Circle. More raucous celebrations take place downtown and in The Flats, a cluster of restaurants and clubs in the old wharf and warehouse district on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. Of the events put on by the medical school, the best attended include an annual talent show ("Doc Opera") and a lavish banquet known as the Hippocrates Ball. Of course, there are more frequent and informal coffeehouses and parties each year.

Class Profile

With regard to the student body, about half of each 130 person class is from Ohio, with the rest from around the country. Each class consists of roughly 40 to 50 percent women and usually about a third nonwhite. Most students live a short walk or drive to school, many in the nearby leafy suburbs of Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights. Rent is cheapest in the neighborhoods just adjacent to the medical school, such as Cleveland's Little Italy, but, in general, housing is not as expensive as in other cities.
